Child and Family Specialist Job Description
Reports to: Executive Director
Wage/Hour Class: Exempt

A Better Chance for Our Children provides foster care and adoption services throughout Delaware.

This position is based in Wilmington and requires travel throughout New Castle County.

The Child and Family Specialist’s primary responsibility is to support all adoption and foster care services provided by the agency.

The Child and Family Specialist must possess very strong organizational skills, strong writing skills, precise documentation and record-keeping skills, an ability to work with a diverse staff and varied program needs, extremely high levels of confidentiality and professionalism, good judgment and problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the flexibility to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced working environment.

Additionally, the Child and Family Specialist must possess the ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and a fast learner and thinker.

This person must have the ability to give and receive feedback and must be able to understand, embrace, support, and promote the true goals and mission of the organization.

Education: At least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in social work or the related human services fields of child welfare, counseling, psychology, child psychology, family studies, or sociology; a master’s degree is preferred.

Other: Valid driver’s license and background check required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities


Serves as a resource person, counselor, and trainer to support the Adoption and Foster Care Programs.

Conducts home or office visits with families, children or other professionals.

Coordinates or attends casework conferences with clients and outside agencies.

Provides adoption, foster care, and post-adoption services.

Communicates regularly with assigned supervisor, outside referral agencies, clients and private or governmental human service agencies regarding transactions, change-of-status or other actions regarding active or inactive cases.

Prepares and submits correspondence, activity records, reports, billing, and documents for management information and government compliance on all cases.

Makes regular visits to families for supervision.

Assists in Family Preparation training in accordance with prescribed curriculum.

Testifies in court or at child review hearings as required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $38,000.00
– $48,000.00 per year
