* DutiesHelpDutiesSummaryThis position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit, in Newark, Delaware.The incumbent will participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory, common to the assigned area of work related to insects.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilities* Observes standard laboratory and field safety procedures.* Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies insect samples and supporting records.* Maintains live colonies of insects* Contributes ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the research.* Keeps detailed records of experimental data.

Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.* Ability to follow assigned protocols and recognizes and reports abnormal or unexpected results.

As directed, searches for literature pertinent to insect for new procedures or techniques to use in the field.* Independently initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.* Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes field data using personal computers and software packages.* Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized field equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.* Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.

Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.Travel RequiredOccasional travel

Related degrees may include: Entomology, biology with an emphases on entomology, zoology with an emphases on entomology, environmental sciences with an emphases on entomology, or wildlife ecology with an emphases on entomology.ORA combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.At The GS-08Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to insects; maintaining insect colonies; collecting or evaluating insect samples; recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating and maintaining standard field or laboratory equipment.OREducation: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master’s degree, if directly related to the position.

Related degrees may include: Entomology, biology with an emphases on entomology, zoology with an emphases on entomology, environmental sciences with an emphases on entomology, or wildlife ecology with an emphases on entomology.ORA combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.At The GS-09Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting a research project related to insects; maintaining insect colonies; collecting and evaluating insect samples; recording and analyzing scientific data for inclusion in manuscripts or technical reports; and operating and maintaining standard field and laboratory equipment.OREducation: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master’s degree, if directly related to the position.

Related degrees may include: Entomology, biology with an emphases on entomology, zoology with an emphases on entomology, environmental sciences with an emphases on entomology, or wildlife ecology with an emphases on entomology.ORA combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending.

In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors.
