Global Medical Head: Renal/Heart Failure

Biopharmaceuticals Medical (BPM) ensures the best patient outcomes by providing healthcare decision makers around the world with the evidence and confidence they need on AstraZeneca (AZ) therapies.

We support our internal stakeholders with medical strategic insight and expertise, with the aim of achieving scientific leadership, whilst aspiring to be a great place and keeping patients at the core of everything we do.

The Global Medical Head – Renal/Heart Failure shapes product and disease area strategy, drives product launches and life cycle management, provides strategic direction for evidence generation, education and publication, and engages extensively externally to further the scientific leadership of AZ.

It is a leadership position that reports directly to the VP Medical Affairs CVRM and is responsible for all aspects of the Medical Affairs plan.

The incumbent is a member of the CVRM BPM leadership team, as well as the Global Product Team (GPT) and Global Brand Team (GBT), has direct reports, and is expected to develop a strong network with regions and countries.

The ideal candidate is an MD, PhD or PharmD with 7-10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, ideally in Medical Affairs, working at the country and global/regional level.

Strong and demonstrable leadership skills are a pre-requisite.

Typical Accountabilities:
Accountable for the development and implementation of the strategic medical plan on a global level
Ensures global strategy is effectively communicated at regional and country levels, and that regional/country needs are appropriately accommodated
Ensures effective collaboration with other key functions within BPM (e.g.

Medical Excellence, Evidence Generation, Patient Centricity, Medical Information, Publications), across functions (e.g.

Commercial, Pricing and Market Access, Research and Development) as well as with regions and markets
Provides quality input to AZ planning and decision-making processes (e.g.

Brand Strategic Plan, lifecycle management)
Ensures operational effectiveness and efficiencies – delivery – through a continuous improvement approach; ensures that key performance indicators (KPIs) are developed and tracked
Represents Medical in cross-functional and cross-departmental projects of special interest
Contributes to establishing and implementing appropriate policies and standards for global Medical activities (e.g.

clinical studies, registries, publications, congress activities, etc)
Ensures all CVRM activities are carried out in compliance with AZ standards and standard operating procedures
Has budget accountability for the team
Coaches, mentors and performance manages direct report, and takes an active role in succession and talent management
Fosters a high performance culture and a strong team spirit
Essential for the role:
Doctoral level degree (MD/PhD/PharmD)
At least 5 years' relevant experience.
Experienced team leader at a global/regional level, with a track record of establishing high performance teams
Strategic and innovative thinker with executive presence
Demonstrated track record delivering results in a complex matrix environment, building capabilities, and leading large scale impactful medical initiatives
Strong analytical mind-set and ability to quickly assess large amounts of information and distil into key messages and actions
Ability to flex between high level strategy and detailed tactics, as required
Success executing multi-year strategic plans
Proven ability to build internal and external networks and to collaborate across geographies and cultures; enterprise leader mindset
Significant experience presenting to senior leadership; persuasive oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver executive presentations
Understanding of the complex and evolving Medical space, including both existing stakeholders and future trends
Integrity and high ethical standards
